Click here to read more about the basics of Chinese medicine and skin disease from an article we wrote for Essential Living Maine Magazine, or here to view our dermatology brochure. Alexa was also recently interviewed for the Chinese Medicine podcast A Healthy Curiosity, discussing her approach to treating skin disease. Take a listen!

In addition to four years of graduate study in Chinese herbs, Alexa also has a post-graduate certification in the treatment of skin disorders with Chinese herbal medicine.  She's travelled repeatedly to London to study under Mazin Al-Khafaji, widely considered to be the preeminent Chinese herbal dermatologist in the West.

It is estimated that 1 in 5 of all outpatient visits to doctors in the United States are made for dermatological complaints.  Despite this need, Western medicine is often unable to find long-term treatments that are both safe and effective.  Chinese medicine treats skin conditions safely and obtains significant, lasting results.

Skin diseases that are effectively treated with Chinese herbal medicine include (but are not limited to) those on the list below.

  • Eczema: childhood eczema, atopic eczema (allergic), discoid eczema, pompholyx eczema (palms soles), stasis eczema (varicose), seborrhoeic dermatitis/eczema (including dandruff), contact and allergic dermatitis, ichthyosis

  • Psoriasis (plaque, guttate, pustular, erythrodermic, arthritic), parapsoriasis (digitate dermatosis)

  • Urticaria, angioedema

  • Acne: teenage acne, post adolescent female acne, nodular-cystic acne (acne conglobata)

  • Rosacea & perioral dermatitis, polymorphic light eruption (sun allergy)

  • Itchy conditions such as lichen simplex (neurodermatitis), nodular & subacute prurigo, generalised itching with no rash etc.

  • Viral and bacterial disease: impetigo, herpes simplex, herpes zoster, warts, molluscum contagiosum, pityriasis rosea

  • Fungal and yeast infection, ringworm of the body, groin, axilla, fungal infection of the feet, hands, nails, pityriasis versicolor, candida albicans

  • Vitiligo, melasma (chloasma)

  • Lichen planus (simple and hypertrophic), panniculitis.
